IS IT BETTER TO BE VEGETARIAN?

It seems that meat-free diets are becoming the fashion. According to the
Desert Sun Newspaper, the number of animals killed for food in the U.S. is
expected to drop 6 percent over previous years.

From a health perspective, the National Cancer Institute reported that
people who ate the most red meat were “most likely to die from cancer,
heart disease and other causes.” The American Dietetic Association has
affirmed that “… vegetarian and vegan diets are healthful, nutritionally
adequate and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of
certain diseases.”

From an environmental standpoint, World Bank scientists claim that meat
production may account for HALF of man-made greenhouse gas emissions!

And from an ethical point of view, it sure feels a lot kinder and gentler
to eat fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, etc., than to eat the flesh of
animals who were horribly abused, then terrified out of their minds as they
awaited their turn at being slaughtered, and then were inhumanely killed so
that we could cut them up and chew their dead bodies.

Jonathan Foer's “Eating Animals” and two other vegan books have made the
bestseller list. The film exposé on the meat industry, “Food, Inc.”,
received a huge response and much critical acclaim. Might be worth
checking them out.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
