Did anyone see the news story about the overpopulation of Chihuahuas, and
that the shelters are getting tons of them turned in lately? Has something
to do with what they call the "Paris Hilton Effect", because people go out
and get a cute little dog like hers and then don't want the dog later so
they just dump it. Poor little dogs. It's not their fault. If anyone has
any ideas what we can do about it, please post them.

I also saw a news piece on the NBC Today Show about the overpopulation of
Chihuahuas. Its intent was to get people to actively adopt for the
holidays rather than purchasing from pet stores, etc. Apparently,
California is particularly inundated with these helpless dogs and are
transferring them to other shelters throughout the country. Being a dog
lover myself (mama to two pugs in addition to two kids!), I was
heartbroken by the story. The sad truth is that so many people are
hesitant to adopt from shelters. I know of two families personally who
were planning (and one did) get pups for their kids for the holidays.
Despite my insistance that they consider rescues, I fall on deaf ears. I
myself am the proud and lucky parent of a rescue dog. How do we change
the negative impressions that so many have regarding shelter dogs?
