A friend of mine recently had to have her dog put to sleep. As anyone who has had to do this knows, it is a gut-wrenching experience, and yet it is the greatest act of love. Her vet did something very unusual and very wonderful just before the dog received the injection. The vet gave the dog a big bowl of chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup! The dog was focused on the bowl of ice cream and didn't even care about the procedure that was being started. We all know that dogs are not allowed to have chocolate during their lives because it is toxic to them. But they love the taste of it. So why not let them have it just before they pass on? It is such an extra loving thing to do. I wish I would have thought of it years ago.

Wow! That is a great act of kindness! I just put my 2nd German Shepherd down last year. His brother, died the year before, kidney failure, but Lobo, the second one, had hip dysplasia, infection in his spine, and could hardly walk, so the only thing to do was to put him down after 13 years. I sat on the floor, talking to him, telling him it was okay for him to go, and to go find his brother, Argos, so that they could run together again. I stroked him while the vet gave him an injection to relax him. After 20 minutes, they cam and gave him the final injection. He died with his head on my lap. I am still grieving his death. I pray that I will see all my pets someday. I still miss him and his brother Argos! They were my heart!
